The Strange Case of the Neocons

“The powers in charge keep us in a perpetual state of fear, keep us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor with the cry of grave national emergency. Always there has been some terrible evil to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it by furnishing the exorbitant sums demanded. Yet, in retrospect, these disasters seem never to have happened, seem never to have been quite real.” - General Douglas MacArthur
With the passage of the second anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it behooves us to pause and reflect upon what has transpired in the intervening two years. Initially, the "war on terror" was directed at those responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda organization and its Taliban hosts were attacked in Afghanistan and it seemed those terrorists would be dealt a lethal blow. But then we began to see what could only be described as "mission creep" with much broader plans being announced by the Bush Administration. Suddenly an "axis of evil" composed of the nations Iraq, Iran, and North Korea was the new target. After a brief interlude with the UN, Iraq was invaded, supposedly to deprive Saddam Hussein of his weapons of mass destruction.
A funny thing has happened though - the weapons haven't been found, despite all the searches and all the interrogations of those Iraqi leaders featured in the now-famous "deck of cards". Further, our troops come daily under attack even though Bush officials told us that the soldiers would be greeted as liberators. Well, maybe joyous greeters met US troops with hugs and kisses, but now we're seeing the other Iraqis...
More Americans in fact have died in Iraq since May 1 when President Bush declared major military operations over than died during the actual combat phase. Meanwhile back in the chaos that is Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al Qaeda are regrouping. The diversion of troops and material to Iraq gave them an opportunity to reassert themselves. Hamid Karzai, the US puppet "president" of Afghanistan has no real power outside of Kabul and can offer no resistance to the reformed Taliban/Al Qaeda.
How did we arrive at this situation? Certainly Americans felt great anger over 9/11, but the attacks of that day provided an exceptional opportunity for a small cabal of advisers within the Bush Administration to implement their own larger plans for a globalist American hegemony. These people, many of whom also served in the Bush Sr. White House, are so-called "neo-conservatives". They are not conservative as we traditional Southerners understand the term, rather they hold an ideology more in line with the Jacobin social radicals of the Lincoln administration.
"The conservative movement has been hijacked and turned into a globalist, interventionist, open borders ideology, which is not the conservative movement I grew up with." - Patrick Buchanan
Who are these neo-conservatives and what do they believe? Roughly speaking, a "neo-con" is a former liberal rather than a traditional conservative (who is now called a "paleo-conservative"). Like their liberal ex-friends they still love big, centralized federal government and oppose states' rights. They admire invasion, military conquest, "pre-emptive strikes" and will lie about the causes of war to justify their establishment of an American empire. They arrogantly and dangerously rely on military might rather than reason, sound policy, and Christian principles. Many of them are still socially liberal and favor abortion, "gay marriage", and oppose traditional family values.
It should come as no surprise to the reader that the origins of modern neo-conservatism lie in the political Left rather than the old conservatism of Dixie. The extent of that leftist history might however be shocking. A leader of neo-con theory, Irving Kristol wrote in 1983 he was proud of his Trotskyite past and bragged about attending the 4th International back in 1940. Other neo-con ideologues like James Burnham and Max Kampelman were also followers of the communist Leon Trotsky as youths. Michael Ledeen, a major neo-con theorist at the American Enterprise Institute notes in his book The War Against The Terror Masters, " Creative destruction is our middle name, both within our own society and abroad. We tear down the old order every day, from business to science, literature, art, architecture, and cinema to politics and the law. Our enemies have always hated this whirlwind of energy and creativity, which menaces their traditions (whatever they may be) and shames them for their inability to keep pace. Seeing America undo traditional societies, they fear us, for they do not wish to be undone. They cannot feel secure so long as we are there, for our very existence—our existence, not our politics—threatens their legitimacy. They must attack us in order to survive, just as we must destroy them to advance our historic mission." Such fanaticism expressed by neo-con leaders ensures our troops will shed their blood in a series of pointless wars for years to come. This writer finds secession from the yankee empire and its nutty fanatics to be the only viable long-term option not only for peace and stability, but for the sake of our children's very lives.
Ledeen's extreme views are reminiscent of statements made by war criminals like Sherman and Sheridan. No traditional Southern conservative should ever mistakenly think these people are our allies; they oppose everything the South stood for - state sovereignty, limited government, and above all, being left alone. Ledeen's comments also remind this writer of Woodrow Wilson, whose dream of a New World Order imposed and governed by yankees came crashing down in the 1930s. Neo-cons are idealist extremists cut from the same mold as Jacobins, Radical Republicans, and terrorists like John Brown.
Representative Ron Paul of the Great and Sovereign State of Texas recently wrote an article listing neo-con views. We can learn to identify these people more readily thanks to Representative Paul (Representative Paul's enlightening article may be read in its entirety at www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul110.html). Briefly, here are the identifying features of neo-conservatives:
1. They agree with Trotsky on permanent revolution, violent as well as intellectual.
2. They believe in preemptive war to achieve desired ends.
3. They accept the notion that the ends justify the means – that hard-ball politics is a moral necessity.
4. They express no opposition to the welfare state.
5. They are not bashful about an American empire; instead they strongly endorse it.
6. They believe lying is necessary for the state to survive.
7. They believe a powerful federal government is a benefit.
8. They believe pertinent facts about how a society should be run should be held by the elite and
withheld from those who do not have the courage to deal with it. (this is from Leo Strauss)
9. They believe neutrality in foreign affairs is ill-advised.
10. They hold Leo Strauss in high esteem.
11. They believe imperialism, if progressive in nature, is appropriate.
12. Using American might to force American ideals on others is acceptable. Force should
not be limited to the defense of our country.
13. 9-11 resulted from the lack of foreign entanglements, not from too many. (they haven't learned!)
14. They dislike and despise libertarians and strict constitutionalists. (more yankee jacobinism!)
15. They endorse attacks on civil liberties, such as those found in the Patriot Act, as being necessary.
I conclude this article with a quote from a surprising source, but one who understood how to manipulate the masses.
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
—Nazi leader Hermann Goering"
